40 years and still standing! High School Shot put: 81'3.5"

The 40 Anniversary of Michael Carter's high school shot put record (81'3.5") set at the Golden West Invitational brought many young throwing enthusiasts out to the pre-meet clinic this past Saturday. 5 Olympians including Michael Carter (Shot Put Silver Medalist), Michelle Carter (Shot Put Gold Medalist), Stephanie Trafton (Discus Gold Medalist), Karin Smith (5-time Olympian Javelin) and Dave Popejoy ('96 Olympian Hammer) along with Channing Wilson (2016 Olympic Trials Javelin) and Mike Curry (Masters National Record - Super Weight) were on site to teach the athletes skills in all the throwing events.  The clinic was offered for free to the athletes entered in the meet as well as anyone who wanted to receive free coaching for the javelin and hammer. Bob Wright, the meet director for Golden West Invitational, wanted this year's celebration of Carter's throw to do more than remember the past. Along with Coach Curry and the Golden State Throwers club, who organized the clinic, this event brought together athletes and coaches to plant a seed for future success in the throwing events. Carter's legacy lives on in the Pacific Association!
